SPAS Students Earn The Most Medals At Sports Meet

                                                                            By Adam(우경서)

St. Paul American School students competed with others at a sports meet hosted by Beijing Number 2 High School on September 29, 2009. It was the second sports meet in two years for SPAS, and it started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 12:00. The SPAS students departed at 6:30 a.m. At the meet, there were many events such as 100m race, 200m*4 relay, 400m race, 800m race, 1500m race, long jump, high jump, and shot put.

Many students and teachers thought this year’s participants were stronger than last year’s.  “I think our students can win in some sports events because there are many good athletes”, said P.E. teacher, Philip.  At this year’s meet, the unexpected happened: SPAS participants earned the most medals in the sports meet, so our school received the number one trophy. SPAS students won medals in nearly every track and field event, including many gold medals.

There was one SPAS competitor the entire student body believed would win a medal: Ken, who won a silver medal last time in the shot put. He is really good at shot put, and the P.E. teacher also expected him to earn a medal this year. As many students and teachers expected, Ken indeed won the gold medal in the shot put.

There were two male participants from SPAS who participated in the 100m race. One was Pierre, the other was Patrick. Pierre was so fast that he won a gold medal with a time of 11.7 seconds! Patrick’s personal record was 11.33 seconds in 100m, but this time, he got 12 seconds, so he missed a gold medal and won a silver medal. Many students enjoyed this exciting sprint competition.

Kenneth, Luke, and Effie all participated in the long jump. They did their best to jump a long distance, so Luke won the gold medal, and Kenneth won the silver medal.

Luke proved that he was really good at track and field because he got two gold medals in long jump and 200m. Many students knew he was a good athlete, but they did not expect such an outstanding result.

One other thing happened at this team’s meet that most students did not expect: female participants did well in their events. Last time, few SPAS participants earned medals, especially the female participants, who came away, empty-handed. However, this year, many female participants won gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Many students thought the 200m*4 girls’ and boys’ medley relay was the most exciting sports event because some runners caught up with and passed competitors who were in front of them. So, even if some runners did not do well, other team members could chase down the athlete who was in front of him or her.  Even though Pierre and John caught the persons in front of them, they lost the event overall. However, all students knew the SPAS athletes did their best, so they congratulated the participants anyway.
